Drogheda, Ireland — It’s a busy morning at a coffee shop in this tiny town in rural Ireland, but no one seems to notice the small sign outside that reads “vegan chocolateries.”
It’s a small shop with a large kitchen, so the owner is not the kind of person who would have to be bothered with such things.
It’s just a regular day for John MacCarthy, a retired school teacher and farmer who’s been making vegan chocolate for decades.
His passion is the same as the passion of everyone else in this town, a passion for chocolate and the small farmers that make it.
John MacCarathy is a retired English teacher who has made chocolate for over 30 years.
He says chocolate is something that people in this small village in the south of Ireland are passionate about.
He’s been trying to sell vegan chocolate since 1993, but he says he doesn’t make enough of it.
“It is a hard job, it’s not just a hobby, I’m in this business for my life,” MacCarachy said.
“If you look at the chocolate industry in Ireland, the industry here is very much run by the very wealthy.
They have very little investment in it.
They buy the most expensive stuff they can find.
So I think they’re really struggling, they’re trying to find the right price.”
The people who make vegan chocolate are not making it for profit.
They are making it to honor the community and to honor MacCarthys memory, a tradition that dates back to the early 1800s.
MacCarthery says he’s proud to be a part of the tradition.
He is part of a small, dedicated group of people who are doing something about a problem that affects the whole community, MacCarTHys daughter and mother, Mary.
MacCarthy says chocolate, or any food, should be created for the community.
“I’ve always made it for my community.
I’ve always been passionate about making chocolate for my village,” he said.
“I have never thought I’d be making chocolate, I’ve been a baker for 50 years.
But I love chocolate.
I’m passionate about it.”
MacCarthies family has been in the chocolate business for more than 50 years, making the local chocolate factory, but now, as he is about to leave for the U.S., MacCarthias wife, Mary, has decided to leave to go to work for a different company.
“They are doing very well, they are very healthy, and they are growing,” he added.
But the work MacCarths family does for the village is a little more than that.
He said he wants to make vegan chocoholics a part to make it a little easier for everyone.
“We don’t want to be an industry that is hurting the community, we want to do it in a way that we can make a difference for everyone,” he explained.
MacArthur says he has always wanted to help others, so he began making vegan choco huggies.
He was always interested in animals, he said, but has always made vegan chocolate because it was so much easier to make.
